Redraw the lead characters' faces, alter the text, and reprint them as "Rob Rome" and "Larry Lemon," or something like that. I had a major publisher and DC behind my effort to do a hardcover book reprint/appreciation of the Jerry Lewis (who else?) comic. We offered an art-book-publishing-sized advance; Jerry's "people" (okay, person) wanted Hollywood-celebrity-publishing money, despite the fact that the project would require little or no effort from Jerry; a brief introduction, at most. I was willing to give up a sizable chunk of my advance to Jerry to get this thing off the ground, but there's not enough money in the world of reprinting old, obscure funny books to cover the money these egos in overpriced shoes demand. DC owns the comic books themselves, but the celebs and/or their estates own the rights to their images. No Jerry, no bookee.

I still love Jerry (I know, I know, I'm pathetic) and I doubt he ever even heard about the project from the momza repping him, some failed comedian-turned-personal-representative whose dad knew Jerry and whose biggest client thereafter was Sammy Petrillo. At the very least, a volume collecting Jerry's adventures with the DC superheroes, and a couple of volumes reprinting the Neal Adams work on the two series. (I'm not saying those are the best issues either in writng or art, but I think those would do decently in the current market.)

0Scotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04154203761080654758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2252129938551938631.post-3592560122428092912012-01-25T15:13:43.913-05:002012-01-25T15:13:43.913-05:00(Not the same Bob)

All my life, he told the story of how, when Hope came to his base with the USO, all passes were canceled and anyone who didn't go to the show got KP. I don't know whether or not Hope himself had anything to do with it, but apparently someone wanted to make sure he had a big crowd for the cameras. (As an adult, I heard a similar story from a coworker who had been in Korea.)Bob Buethehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04624148139233566430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2252129938551938631.post-38729429718739402012-01-25T11:26:35.843-05:002012-01-25T11:26:35.843-05:00I would love for DC to reprint some of their non-s...I would love for DC to reprint some of their non-superhero books. As I'm from Pittsburgh, I know that at that same time Bing Crosby was a VP with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Unfortunately both franchises were pretty bad then, but wouldn't it have been cool if the Indians had met the Pirates in the World Series, which would have pitted Hope against Crosby?Richard J. It's one of the Times Past issues, set in the 1940's. I'm looking forward to seeing your thoughts on that one. For me, it was the issue that really showed me that Robinson was heading back toward the top of his game and moving away from his Justice League stuff.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2252129938551938631.post-21129782309012501972012-01-25T06:45:46.493-05:002012-01-25T06:45:46.493-05:00Would like to see DC comics reprint the Jerry Lewi...Would like to see DC comics reprint the Jerry Lewis comics that he teamed up with Superman, Batman, The Flash and Wonder Woman!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
