TONY'S TIPS #200

This week at TALES OF WONDER...something different for my 200th TONY'S TIPS column for the site!

  1. My introduction to The Beano was back in the early '80s. I was just getting into organized fandom and found a classified ad in the old CBG, where a British comics fan wanted to trade misc. British weeklies for a like number of issues of The Phantom from various publishers. I scored several dozen issues of 2000 A.D., some annuals (hardcover issues of different titles) and a half dozen issues of Beano. You completely capture the style of the comic in your review. Dennis was a revelation and the rest of the kid characters a lot of fun.

Those books are long gone, in some sale or other, but it's nice to know that the Bash Street Kids are still causing trouble for parents and other adults.

  2. Tony,
Given Scottish heritage I've been reading Beano, Dandy, Dennis the Menace since the 1960s via a great aunt. These books rocked the house at Christmas time because DC Thompson produced these as majestic, hard-covered, large sized, annuals they released for Christmas. So, flash forward to today, and most of the annuals are no longer produced... welcome to the 21st century, I guess. But I still read them, my kids read them, I'm sure the annuals will be passed along to the grand kids... I've been able to go back and get the ones from the 60s - 2000s on ebay easy enough but it is a slim market. And whatever you do, do NOT pay the weird prices being asked by Mile High who seems to have entered the market. For the last 15 years I've been one of a handful (like 2 - 3 in the whole USA!!!) who buy the Dandy, Beano, Dennis the Menace, Beezer, Topper, etc. Annuals at around $ 2- $5 each. In the last month or so, Mile High is trying to sell them at $40 - $80 each. To who??? One last thing, the best of the Scottish Annuals may be Oor Wullie and The Broons. Really, really heart warming, funny, family humor. Also, how do I email you. I have a thought for you. My email is petro_joseph@hotmail.com. You do not have to post this but if I could email you, I have a thought I simply want to give you for a project. I have NO interest at ALL in the project, but I think it should be done since it expires by June 6, 2019. YOu are more than welcome to keep this "comment" as proof I have no interest in the idea other than hoping someone with talent pursues it. Cheers, Joe

  5. Tony, thanks for the Beano review. The modern Beano is fun but if you want to see it in its heyday buy a few issues from the late fifties on eBay (they're about $15 each). Back then Leo Baxandale, the Jack Kirby of British humour comics, was drawing Bash St Kids, Minnie the Minx and others and he is a straight up genius- they are hilariously funny strips!
