Another mini-blog...
Man-Thing by Steve Gerber: The Complete Collection Vol. 1 [Marvel; $39.99] kicks off a complete reprinting of the great writer’s epic run with the character. The 440-page trade paperback also features stories by Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, Len Wein and yours truly. This could be for completeness sake or to show readers that, despite how good all of those writers might have been, no one was better than Gerber when it came to spinning tales of “Marvel’s melancholy muck-monster.” Here’s the Amazon pitch:
Marvel's melancholy muck-monster, by the man who knows him best! With the Nexus of All Realities as the ultimate staging post, prepare for the wildest journeys of your life in this first volume of a complete collection of Steve Gerber's Man-Thing tales! Join the most startling swamp-creature of all in encounters with the Thing, sorcerers Dakimh and Jennifer Kale, and the most far-out fowl ever created, Howard the Duck! Plus existential angst, clashes with the modern world, and the death of a clown!

Is this listing correct, or is this collection not "compete?"
ReplyDeleteWhy end MAN-THING with #8? Also missing are the first two issues of MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE, the five issues of GIANT-SIZE MAN-THING, and the text story from MONSTERS UNLEASHED 8-9. All of these were by Gerber.

This is Vol. 1 as stated above. I assume those stories will be in Vol. 2.
ReplyDeleteWoops. Don't know how I missed that.
ReplyDeleteI also see I can't spell "complete" correctly.

Gerber did some great stuff with that character. He was completely different from another muck encrusted guy over at the Distinguished Competition. Wow, completely forgot that you had written some stories for the character.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad Marvel finally reprinted the first issue Marvel 2in1. This story was not included in the essential collection or in the omnibus. I hope it sells well enough that a second (concluding) edition will swiftly follow. I love Gerber's MT stories, they were favorites of mine as a kid, and I look forward to finally having a true complete compilation set.
